Entry requirements

  • ·A recognised bachelor's degree for master's entry; Indian Class 12 alone is usually not sufficient for direct undergraduate entry
  • ·Many applicants need a Studienkolleg foundation year or one year of Indian university study before undergraduate entry
  • ·English-taught courses: IELTS 6.5 typically; German-taught: usually TestDaF or DSH
  • ·A blocked account showing funds for living costs for the student visa
  • ·APS certificate verification for Indian applicants

After you graduate

Graduates can apply for an 18-month residence permit to look for work related to their qualification. Once employed, the EU Blue Card offers a route towards settlement, and Germany's engineering and IT shortage makes this route realistic for the right profiles.

Studying in Germany — FAQs

Is studying in Germany really free for Indian students?

At most public universities there is no tuition fee even for international students — you pay only a semester contribution of around €150–€350 which usually includes a public transport pass. You still need to fund living costs, and the visa requires a blocked account to prove it. Private universities do charge full tuition.

Do I need to know German?

Not for English-taught programmes, which are common at master's level — those ask for IELTS instead. German-taught courses require TestDaF or DSH. Even on an English course, B1-level German significantly improves your part-time work and post-study job prospects.

What is a blocked account?

A German bank account holding a set amount to prove you can support yourself for a year. The required figure is set by the German authorities and updated periodically. You draw a fixed monthly amount from it after you arrive.
