When to apply for United States
Fall (August/September)
The main intake by a wide margin - most funding and assistantships are attached to it. Apply 10-12 months ahead.

Limited, and mostly for specific programmes.
Indicative tuition
Indicative ranges only — tuition varies by university, course and intake, and changes year to year. We build an exact figure for your shortlist.
Entry requirements
- ·Undergraduate: strong Class 12 results; SAT may be required by some universities
- ·Postgraduate: a recognised bachelor's degree; GRE or GMAT for many programmes, though a growing number waive it
- ·English: IELTS 6.5-7.0 or TOEFL 80-100 depending on the university
- ·Financial documents covering the first year for the I-20 and the F-1 visa interview
- ·SOP, LORs and a resume - US admissions weigh these heavily
After you graduate
Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows 12 months of work after graduation, extended by a further 24 months for eligible STEM degrees - a total of three years. Many graduates use that window to move onto an H-1B.
Scholarships worth knowing
Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships
Prestigious awards for Indian students pursuing master's or research in the US.
University assistantships
Teaching and research assistantships can cover tuition plus a stipend, mainly at master's and doctoral level. This is where most funding actually comes from.
Merit scholarships
Many US universities award partial tuition scholarships automatically on admission.

Studying in United States — FAQs
How much does it cost to study in the USA from India?
Tuition ranges widely - roughly USD 20,000-60,000 a year - because public and private universities differ enormously. Add USD 12,000-20,000 a year for living costs. Assistantships and merit awards can reduce this substantially, so the sticker price is rarely what a funded student actually pays.
Do I need GRE or GMAT for US universities?
It depends on the programme. Many universities have made the GRE optional for master's admissions, while competitive MBA and some STEM programmes still expect a strong score. We check the current requirement for each university on your shortlist.
What is OPT and STEM OPT?
Optional Practical Training gives you 12 months of work authorisation after graduating. If your degree is on the STEM designated list, you can apply for a 24-month extension, giving three years in total - which is why STEM courses are popular with Indian students.
