Questions to ask
Ask any agent these questions
Including us. Here is what the official guide says you should expect to hear back.
- 01
Can you tell me about the education opportunities offered in the UK?
A well-trained agent will explain the UK education system, the different regions of the UK and the schools, colleges and universities they represent, giving you a good understanding of the many options open to you.
- 02
Do you comply with the UK's National Code of Ethical Practice for UK Education Agents?
They should know what the national code is and show you a copy. Familiarise yourself with it to see how your agent is doing.
- 03
Are you paid a commission by the schools, colleges or universities that you promote?
Most education providers pay a commission for the agent to represent them, which covers the agent's operating costs — so the answer will usually be 'yes'. Either way, they should give you high-quality and unbiased advice.
- 04
Do you charge any fees? Can you give me a list of all potential fees, what they are for and when they are expected?
Agent fees are typically covered by the education provider, but agents may charge for some additional services. They should be clear from the start about any fees and what they are for. If unsure, check with the institutions you plan to apply to.
- 05
Are you licensed to act as an education agent?
The UK does not require a licence for agents to recruit students to UK institutions, but agents in your country may need a local licence. Check with your government's education department or official agent association websites.
- 06
Are you a licensed UK immigration adviser?
Many good agents are not licensed UK immigration advisers and can still help with your student visa application. Make sure you understand the requirements yourself — use gov.uk, UKCISA and Study UK, and beware of unverified information such as online forums.
- 07
When did you last receive training on UK visa regulations?
Good agents regularly attend training delivered by their partner institutions, the British Council and UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).
- 08
Can I speak to a former student of yours who is studying in the UK?
Most agents keep in touch with the students they place. Speaking to them is a useful way to learn about their experience — remember every student's situation is different.
- 09
Will you offer me any additional support after I arrive in the UK?
Some agents offer help after you arrive, such as visa updates and accommodation support.
Remember, where and what you study is your decision. Agents are there to help you make an informed decision, not to decide for you. If an agent offers to hold money, apply for or offer loans, or make fee payments on your behalf, check with your chosen institution that this is legitimate.
