The Real Cost of Studying in the UK from India

Tuition, living costs, the visa financial requirement and the expenses most students forget — a realistic budget for an Indian student planning a UK master's.

Updated 16 August 2026 · AimBritz

Start with the two numbers that matter

Almost every cost conversation about the UK collapses into two figures: what the university charges, and what it costs to live there. Everything else is a rounding error by comparison, and getting these two right early saves you from shortlisting universities you were never going to afford.

For a taught master's, tuition typically runs between £12,000 and £30,000 for the year. The spread is wide because it tracks the subject and the institution — business and computing sit at the upper end, arts and humanities lower, and an MBA is a different conversation entirely.

Living costs depend enormously on the city

London is the outlier, and treating a London budget as a UK budget is the most common planning mistake we see. Outside London most students manage on noticeably less, and university-managed accommodation is usually cheaper than the private market in the first year.

Build your estimate from rent first, then add food, transport, phone and a realistic allowance for the things nobody budgets for — a winter coat, course materials, the flight home.

The visa has its own financial requirement

This trips people up: the money you need to show the Home Office is separate from the money you actually spend. You must evidence funds covering your tuition plus a set monthly living amount, held for a required period before you apply, in an acceptable account.

The amounts and the rules are set by the UK government and are updated periodically. Confirm the figure that applies on the day you apply — not the one a blog post quoted last year.

What actually reduces the total

In our experience, most students save money in one of three places rather than by finding a single large scholarship.

  • ·University merit awards — partial tuition reductions, often a few thousand pounds, that many Indian applicants qualify for automatically on a strong profile
  • ·Choosing a city outside London, which can change your living costs substantially over a year
  • ·Part-time work during term, which supports living costs — though it should never be part of your tuition plan

A sensible way to plan

Work out your total for a specific shortlist rather than in the abstract. Two universities offering the same course can differ by several thousand pounds a year once accommodation is included, and that difference is often larger than any scholarship you would win.

Common questions

How much does a UK master's cost in total for an Indian student?

As a planning range, tuition of £12,000–£30,000 plus living costs of roughly £9,000–£15,000 for the year, with London at the upper end. Your exact total depends on the university, city and course — we build a precise figure for your shortlist free of charge.

Can I fund a UK degree through part-time work?

No. Student visa holders can usually work up to 20 hours a week in term time, which helps with living costs, but it will not cover tuition and should never be relied on as part of your funding plan.
