Studying in the UK Without IELTS: What's Actually Possible
Some UK universities will accept a Medium of Instruction letter or their own assessment instead of IELTS — but the exemption is narrower than most agents suggest. Here is how it really works.

The honest version
You will see this advertised a great deal, often misleadingly. The accurate position is that some UK universities will waive a formal English test for some applicants, on some courses. It is a genuine route, but it is not a blanket exemption and it is not offered by every institution.
Two things are being confused in most marketing. The university sets its own English requirement for admission. The Home Office separately sets English requirements for the visa. An exemption from one is not automatically an exemption from the other.
The most common route: a Medium of Instruction letter
If your previous degree was taught and examined in English, many universities will accept a Medium of Instruction letter from that institution in place of a test score. This is the route most Indian applicants use successfully.
Universities vary on how recent the qualification must be and which institutions they accept it from, so this has to be checked university by university rather than assumed.
Other possibilities
Some universities run their own internal English assessment, usually a short online test or an interview. Others accept alternative approved tests. A strong English score in Class 12 is occasionally sufficient for certain undergraduate routes.

When you will still need a test
Courses with professional registration attached — nursing being the clearest example — generally require a formal test regardless, because the regulator rather than the university sets the bar. Some visa routes also require an approved Secure English Language Test.
If your target is a regulated profession, plan for the test rather than hoping for a waiver.
